Renew titre de séjour étudiant

In FrenchRenouvellement du titre de séjour étudiant

If you're studying in France on a titre de séjour étudiant, you renew it every year on ANEF (administration-etrangers-en-france.interieur.gouv.fr). Since 2024 the entire renewal flow is online — except biometrics, which still happen in person at the préfecture once your dossier passes the document review.

The deadline is hard. File between four and two months before your current titre expires. Filing later is technically allowed but you risk a gap where your titre has expired and the récépissé hasn't arrived, which means no legal right to work, travel back into France, or sign anything official.

You'll need your current titre, a valid passport (at least three months remaining beyond the new title), an inscription certificate from your university, proof of resources (€7,380 minimum for 2026 — bank statements, parental commitment, or scholarship), and proof of address less than three months old. Diplomas from the past year matter: you have to show academic progression for the renewal to be granted.

Common questions

When should I start the renewal?

Between four and two months before your current titre expires. ANEF lets you file as early as four months out and that's the safest window. Two months is the legal minimum and only works if your file is clean — any back-and-forth eats into the runway.

What's the renewal fee?

€75 for the renewal itself plus a €25 droit de timbre — €100 total in 2026. Paid online during ANEF submission via timbre fiscal.

What proof of resources do students need?

€7,380 per academic year (2026 baseline). Acceptable proofs: French or foreign bank statements showing the equivalent, a notarised parental commitment with parents' tax notice, a CROUS bourse notification, or a salary contract if you also work part-time. ANEF accepts a combination of sources.

What if my titre expires before the new one is issued?

ANEF issues an attestation de prolongation that extends your rights for three months while the renewal is processed. It's automatic the moment your file is accepted — you don't have to ask. If processing drags past those three months, ANEF re-issues the attestation. Keep the document on hand for travel and employment.

Will the préfecture check my academic progression?

Yes. You're expected to show real academic activity — passed exams, advancing year, attendance. Repeating the same year twice is tolerated once with a credible reason. Repeating twice without explanation is a refus risk. Attach exam results and a short justification if anything looks unusual.
