Your French avis d'impôt 2026: when the refund lands, when the payment comes out
The 2026 avis d'impôt went online from late July. Refunds were paid 24 or 31 July, and any balance you owe is debited from 25 September.
You filed your déclaration de revenus in the spring. The avis d'impôt is what comes back: the document that says whether France owes you money or you owe France money, and on which dates that gets settled. For 2026 (income earned in 2025), the avis appear in your espace on impots.gouv.fr between the end of July and early September. The exact day depends on your situation, so an avis that hasn't shown up yet is usually not a problem.
If you are owed a refund
Refunds for the 2026 campaign were paid automatically by bank transfer on 24 or 31 July 2026, with no action needed from you. The label on the statement reads DGFIP. If the tax office has no bank details for you, they post a cheque to your home address instead, which is slower and depends on your address being current in your espace. A refund usually means your prélèvement à la source over the year took more than your final bill, or that a credit d'impôt (childcare, home services, donations) landed after the advance paid in January.
If you owe a balance
The balance is called the solde and it is debited automatically from the account registered with the tax office. You do not need to trigger anything, but you do need money in that account on the dates below.
- Balance of €300 or less: one single debit on 25 September 2026.
- Balance above €300: four equal debits, on 25 September, 26 October, 25 November and 28 December 2026.
- The exact amounts appear on the avis itself, so you can plan before the first date.
If the amount is a problem
Ask for a délai de paiement through the secure messaging in your espace particulier on impots.gouv.fr rather than letting a debit bounce. The trésor public grants payment plans routinely, and a request made before the debit date is treated very differently from one made after a rejected payment. Explain the situation, propose a schedule, and keep the reply.
The line to check while you are in there
Find the revenu fiscal de référence on the avis. That single figure is what CAF, the CROUS, your mairie, and half of French admin use to calculate what you are entitled to. If it looks wrong (a foreign income counted twice, a household situation that changed), correct it now through a déclaration rectificative. Left alone, one wrong number quietly distorts every benefit calculation for a year.
An avis d'impôt is several pages of tables, form numbers, and French tax vocabulary, with the one line that actually asks something of you buried in the middle. Upload yours to Mes Papiers and we'll tell you in English whether it is a refund or a bill, how much, and the date it moves.
